Fund Raiser cancelled - funds lost

Sunday, August 31st 2008 @ 3:11 PM    post viewed 420 times

The fund raiser in Troy, Montana, named “Hawgs and

Paws” will not be this year.

This is a double whammy for the shelter "Kootenai Pets for Life", as there was in place a $20,000 donation challenge to match funds for August.

Perhaps just a sign of the times, but there is so much more. This weekend, here in our sleepy little town was to be one of the biggest fund raising events of the year for the local shelter, Kootenai Pets for Life.

For the last several years one of the local pubs (yes, pub! Actually a historic building with a rich history) had to cancel their local fund raiser “Hawgs and Paws”.  It always has been a full weekend event with picnic grounds and the usual bike touring

of mostly Harley motor cycle enthusiasts, and their dogs!

They travel many back roads, and generally have over a couple hundred participants.  All funds, usually running in the neighborhood of $3,000 to $5,000 is donated to Kootenai Pets for Life.

Cancellation was due to lack of local support and participation.

When I spoke with the owner of the Home Bar and one of the sponsors of the event, Bruce,he was quite saddened by the cancellation. In talking things over and trying to see another way of supporting this worthy cause,  we came away almost empty handed. Too late this year to pull something of this magnitude together in short order.

Being the pet loving person he is he offered to let us, at PetLovers Action Network, put up information inside on his Bulletin boards and offered to spread the word of our work.

This is Montana, and the city Troy barely boasts of only approximate 1,000 population.  We are mostly a logging community, and supported by timber and related operations.  The economy is at a very low ebb especially with gas prices - the unemployment

rate I won’t even try to guess at.

This cancellation, due to lack of support is typical of what is going on around the country,

the rural areas especially are being hit like never before. Funds are drying up.

Folks we NEED Pet Lovers Action Network and its members to spread the word.  After our launch, the monies that will be pouring out our doors to shelters of every type, IS going to make a difference.

If you have a moment look at the blog of

Triple L Horse Rescue, one of our members.  Although she wasn’t able to sustain the Rescue by means of money coming from us as we are not taking paid memberships yet, information and personal support she was able to gain through our network kept her from having to close this past month.  Now that’s making a difference!

Thank you, each of you, for being with us.  Thank you for actively participating in our community. Please, continue to post information about your Rescue or Organization, files you may have, stories you would like to share, and any information which will help other shelters, rescues and volunteers Save the life of a dear animal.

God Bless,

PS: Watch for my next article on “Beast”, a beautiful, gentle, Rottwieler who crossed

The Bridge this year, and his contribution to our community.
