When It Rains It Pours - Charlie Sick

Tuesday, July 29th 2008 @ 7:57 PM    post viewed 246 times

For the last 2 days I have been doctoring Charlie. Charlie is our abused case, he was severely beaten by men and has very big issues. He has come a long way since his arrival 1 1/2 yrs ago, but it is still a long road.

Anyway Charlie has been hit with severe diarrhea. He is on electrolytes to replenish what he loses, 1 dose a day with probios, no sweet feed, just hay, grass and water. Charlie has also been moved to the quarantine pen. I am keeping close contact with the vet.

Our vet came out today to look him over and seems to be doing pretty good other than the diarrhea. The vet said to keep the electrolytes coming, 2 more days of the probios, and keep him in shade. I have no area to keep him in that is shaded so I go outside and water him down every one to two hours to help keep him cool.

I am trying to get him to let me work at his back end, but he will have nothing to do with me being there. His tail and legs are so yucky with poop, I do the best I can with the hose but it won't get it all off. I have tried taking a bucket out there with a sponge, nope - he wants nothing to do with that either. When I get by his butt he starts getting really agitated. So I just continue to go slow and steady.

It's been a long couple days - can't seem to sleep through the night. I get up and go outside and shine the flashlight on him to make sure he is ok, then go back to bed.

I thought that the possibilty of us having to close our doors was upsetting and heartbreaking - but this is worse. I want him better, I'm scared that he will get worse. I feel so helpless, I wish he could talk to me and understand me when I tell him I just want to make him feel better. I just want to get him cleaned up and doctor up his butt - he just won't listen to me . . . but I will keep trying.

I will keep going. I will survive this. And I will not give up the rescue without a fight. If we could find some land I would gladly pitch a tent and live in that as long as there is a place for the horses. I hate bugs and I keep telling hubby "I don't do ground" when he asks me to go camping - but for the horses - I would do it.

This is getting long so I will end here. I will post updates as often as I can. Please keep Charlie in your prayers for a speedy recovery.

Thank You and God Bless.

TLHR May Have to Close

Saturday, July 26th 2008 @ 1:22 PM    post viewed 127 times

This has been a bad week but before I get into that I need to start from the beginning.

We opened our horse rescue in 2005, became a non profit in 2006 and seemed to be doing what we set out to do - Saving Horses. TLHR has rescued 9 horses; found forever, loving homes for 3, sadly euthanized 2 (took the soul right out of me), and continue to rehabilitate 4 at the rescue.

A little over a year ago our landlord informed us he will be turning the property into a subdivision and it was time for us to start looking for a new place. We have been searching and continue to search to this day, everyday not knowing if or when we will get our final eviction notice. Very stressful and I hate living in limbo - but we survived to this point.

My husband retired from the navy, became employed by a security company then later bought the business. Everything was going good. He was building the business up, he brought it out of the red and into the black. Life was good and even though donations for the rescue were few and far between - we were making it, never really worried. We knew from the beginning that a lot of our personal finances and savings would have to take care of everything until we got the rescue on its feet with grants, sponsors, volunteers, etc.

and now for the rest of the story. . . . .

This week has been the worst and lowest of the lows. The economy has begun to strick at us. Hubby lost 4 clients in the last 2 weeks because of "cut backs". The last couple nights at home has been discussing what to do. He may have to shut the doors of his business which in turn will trickle down to my dream. We won't be able to afford to live where we are living, let alone take care of all the horses, dogs and cats that we have.  So we may have to close our doors, breaks my heart to even think about it. The horses will need to go to other rescues, the dogs and cats will need new homes. Our daughter has opened her home to us if it comes down to it, she just can't accomodate the extra animals. Pretty much been a basket case around here and I try not to cry when hubby is around - he feels bad enough and he feels like he has failed me. He hasn't - he is the best. I'm lucky to have found him, but that is another story in its self.

Anyway, we will have more of an idea as to where we are at in the next couple weeks. Close or not close - that is the question for the both of us. We no longer have years or months to get help, we now have weeks - how many? Not sure, and there is no grant out there that we know of that will come fast enough to save us.

We are planning a celebrity auction for the horses in October - yes, it may be to late for us by then but after outstanding bills are paid from the money raised the rest of the money will be donated to another non profit.

I hope and pray that something comes through for us - I don't want to close my doors. I love what I do. But if it is meant to be . . . . . . it will be.

Please say a prayer or two for us.
